What do you think of the NYT article: Joel Stein’s “Adults Should Read Adult Books”?Here’s the article, if you’re curious.
I think it’s complete and utter drivel from the pretentious mind of someone who clearly has lost the ability to discern any joy or wonder…
R.I.P. Maurice Sendak, author and illustrator of Where the Wild Things Are, who died today at age 83.
Sendak on death: “I have nothing now but praise for my life. I’m not unhappy. I cry a lot because I miss people. They die and I can’t stop them. They leave me and I love them more. … What I dread is the isolation. … There are so many beautiful things in the world which I will have to leave when I die, but I’m ready, I’m ready, I’m ready.”
“The whole promise is to do the work.”

Ahhhhh one of my best friends in the entire universe got engaged today! C: She and her boyfriend have been dating for five years now and it is about time. Yeah just wanted to share that.
I find that, when writing bios, it’s really helpful to look at a list or a chart like the one above. Picking two or three traits from each chart and building a character based around them will give you a really interesting bio, because they will serve as a reminder that characters need depth and dimension.
Independent and clever.
VS.
Independent, clever, pretentious, and stubborn.
The first combination doesn’t come with any flaws, whereas the second will provide a more dynamic character.
This advice reminds me of playing The Sims (yup I’m that much of a nerd). I once was advised that when choosing personality traits for your sims always make sure at least 1 out of 5 of the traits is something negative or undesirable. It’ll make your sim a lot more interesting and realistic.
The same is true for the characters in your story. There’s a reason why the term mary-sue is used with so much disdain.

You ever read a book and when you finish it, you just need to reevaluate your entire life?
Yeah.

Oh gosh, my best friend and I read the first two books of this series in high school. We were always like, “What is even going on here?” And the books were always like, “Romance! Drama! Secret society! Magic! Homoerotic subtext!”
Yeah.
And for a while, we were super into anagrams.
